Default Lion vs big game hunter... Lion 1, hunter 0!

Yet again a big game hunter (probably a poacher) has been found eaten by at least two lions he was hunting in Africa...

https://www.yahoo.com/news/suspected...141210605.html

And this happened to another trophy hunter a month or so back as well.

Too bad his fate cannot be the fate of all poachers. For stalking a pride of lions solo with no backup, this guy should qualify for a Darwin Award.

I really have no time for trophy hunters and especially poachers of big, exotic game.

There are already enough problems with these animals welfare, that we don't need people killing them for selfish reasons. When they are gone, they are gone.

And yes, a trophy hunter was eaten by Lions a few weeks ago, as well.

I know some here are won't agree with this, but I also saw where a man shot and killed a 500lb black Bear in Greenville co. I don't agree with that, either, regardless if it was legal are not. The animal had no history of violence towards humans. We are far more of a threat to them, than they are us.

If you go out in an area where there is known to be dangerous wild animals, you become the hunted, too.

Take a camera next time and you'll impress me with beautiful pics and the fact there was no harm to the animals.

I love stories when the animals rise up and hunters/poachers become the hunted. I’m always rooting for the animals.

Too bad the same fate didn’t await Eric Trump and Don the Con Jr when they went big game hunting.

As a Biologist/Ecologist by training, I don't really get trophy hunting, or hunting for predators. In short, all of those animals are K selected vs r selected organisms like rabbits, birds and wild hogs.

I'll just leave it at that.

Hunting for predators makes sense in terms of culling populations or protecting personal live stock, but beyond that, it is just done for sport.

Oh, I get it. But I've always held the contention that if deer, elk or other prey species are managed properly, then you wouldn't have to cull the predators.

But I'm no expert in that field.

I think the wolf population out west is a good example. They have started issuing limited wolf permits because even with management of other prey species the wolf population grew rapidly. Granted, some of the decision to legalize wolf trapping has to do with keeping the big game population large enough for humans to hunt as well. That's about the extent of my knowledge on the subject.

I enjoy hunting, but I also eat what I kill, and people do not eat lions. (do they?)

I live only 4-5 hours from Yellowstone, and one of my cohorts from grad school worked with some of the original wolf biologists from Yellowstone (and their project to release red wolves in eastern NC). I'll say that, as a biologist/ecologist, the decision to reintroduce grey wolves to the greater yellowstone ecosystem was one of the best wildlife management decisions of the 19th century. However....

with that being said, the management "issues" with the wolves are more of a manufactured political nature than ecological. The ranching and trophy hunting groups in this part of the world are VERY powerful. And as a scientist, that's fine with me. In a democratic society, we have to have balance between both human and nature. In my mind, neither group should have too much influence over our decisions. Some of the antics that have gone on with regards to wolf hunting disappoints me. Not really because they are harvesting the wolves, but the tactics and behaviors of the hunters that target them. They seem to take out their frustration with the political agendas and policies on the animals, and I personally don't like that. Things like intentionally taking the alpha males and females in a pack (in hopes of the pack disbanding) or chasing wolves 20-30 miles on snow machines until they drop from exhaustion before harvesting them. In my mind, there is nothing sporting about that.

That's not sporting, and not how it should be done. Sad to hear that. Are these people upset about the loss of livestock or just the policies in general?
